| Toile de Jouy, commonly called Toile, is a process for printing on cotton that was invented by a young French fabric manufacturer in 1759. "Toile" means canvas or cloth and "Jouy" represents the abbreviated name of the village, Jouy-en-Josas, which was prosperous in textiles during this time. Traditional motifs are inspired by the French countryside and typically include scenes of pastoral life and village festivals.
Long a favorite of designers, Toile has enchanted Marie Antoinette and been honored by Louis XVI. Today, this design is enjoying another renaissance and has been deemed "the new leopard" by Time magazine.
